Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a condition in which the lens of the eye loses its ability to focus, making it difficult to see close objects.

Causes

In the young eye, the lens must change its length or shape to focus on near objects. The ability of the lens to change shape called elasticity of the lens. This elasticity is gradually lost with age. The result is a slow decline in the ability of the eye to focus on nearby objects
.People usually notice the condition of about 45 years, when they realize they need to hold reading material farther to focus on them. Presbyopia is a natural part of aging and affects everyone.

Treatment

There is no cure for presbyopia, but can be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. In some cases, adding a prescription bifocal existing sufficient. As the ability to focus decreases, bifocals prescription be strengthened.Around 65, the eyes have usually lost most of the elasticity needed to focus more closely. However, it is still possible to read with the right prescription. Even so, you may need to hold reading materials farther, and you may need large print and more light to read.People who do not need glasses for distance vision may only need glasses half or reading glasses.People who are nearsighted may be able to remove their distance glasses to read. With the use of contact lenses, some people choose to correct one eye for near vision and one for distance vision. This is called "monovision" and eliminates the need for bifocals or reading glasses, but can affect depth perception.Sometimes monovision can be produced by the laser vision correction. There are also bifocal contact lenses can correct vision for far and near in both eyes.New surgical procedures can also provide solutions for people who do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses.
